The pattern I didn't know I was seeing

A few years ago, I thought experienced potters just had better instincts than what I did.

I would look at their art and it really looked like they could just pick up any glaze, put a few combinations together, and somehow know what would happen.

The more I tested, the more I realized that wasn't actually what was happening.

There were patterns.

Some of my glazes behaved in predictable ways. Some stayed exactly where I put them, some loved to move. Some broke over texture, some completely buried it. Once I started paying attention to how a glaze behaved instead of just the colour of it, everything started to make more sense.

That became the beginning of what I now call the
Glaze Personality Method.

It's the framework I've been building over the past year, and it's the backbone of the workbook I've been writing.

Instead of copying combos off Pinterest or those glazing Facebook groups, instead of buying exactly the glaze you see online only for it to look totally different in your kiln, the goal is to understand the glazes you already own, so you can feel really confident in what you're doing... and maybe more importantly, make art you feel really proud of.

One of the questions I keep getting asked is:

"Have you listed which commercial glazes fit into which personality?"

Yes!

I'm building reference pages with common glazes organised by personality, along with finished examples, layering ideas, design templates, and the exact thinking behind why it all works. My dream is that it'll be a resource you can keep coming back to whenever you plan a new piece.

I'm still putting the finishing touches on it, and seeing your questions has shaped what goes into it more than you probably think!
